Karahi in Lahore: Where to Go and What You'll Pay

Karahi is the meal Lahore defaults to. Guests arriving, cricket match on, someone got a promotion — the answer is karahi. But it's also the dish people most often get overcharged on, because the pricing model is unusual and most people don't check.

Understanding the price first

Karahi is sold by weight of raw meat, not by portion. When a menu says "Chicken Karahi — Rs 3,600", that's per kilogram. That kilo is the raw chicken weight; once cooked with tomatoes, ginger and green chillies it becomes a fairly generous dish.

Rough guide as of early 2026:

- **Chicken karahi:** Rs 3,000–4,500 per kg

  • Mutton karahi: Rs 5,500–7,500 per kg
  • Half kilo is standard for two people
  • One kilo comfortably feeds three, generously four with enough naan

So a table of four eating a kilo of chicken karahi with naan, salad and drinks is looking at roughly Rs 4,500–5,500 total — about Rs 1,200 a head. That's genuinely good value for what arrives at the table.

What separates a good karahi from an average one

**Tomato ratio.** A proper Lahori karahi is tomato-heavy and reduces down to a thick, clinging masala rather than a soupy gravy. If it arrives watery, they rushed it.

**Fat.** Butt-style karahi uses a lot of ghee or butter and doesn't apologise for it. If you're not into that, ask for it lighter — most places will accommodate.

**Green chilli and ginger at the end.** Julienned ginger and slit green chillies added late, not cooked to death. This is the tell of a kitchen that cares.

**Cooking time.** A good karahi takes 25–40 minutes from order. If it lands in ten, it was pre-made.

Where people go

**Butt Karahi, Lakshmi Chowk.** The reference point. Rich, buttery, unapologetic. Expect a wait, expect noise, expect to pay slightly above average. Most people think it's worth it at least once.

**Lakshmi Chowk generally.** The whole area is karahi and tikka. Prices are competitive because the competition is literally next door. Wander and pick by how busy a place is.

**Gawalmandi and the old city.** Older, cheaper, less polished. If you want the version your uncle grew up eating, it's here.

**Gulberg and DHA branches.** The famous names have opened cleaner, air-conditioned branches. The food is usually 80–90% as good and the price is 20–30% higher. Fair trade if you have family with you.

Practical ordering advice

Order half a kilo first. You can always add more, and karahi is much better fresh than reheated.

Ask whether the price includes naan. Usually it doesn't — factor Rs 40–80 per naan.

Mutton karahi takes longer and costs nearly double. Order it only if you actually prefer mutton, not because it sounds more premium.

Go early or very late. Peak dinner hours at the famous places mean 30–45 minute waits for a table.

The verdict

Karahi remains one of the best value meals in Lahore because you're paying for meat by weight rather than for a plated portion. Four people can eat extremely well for the price of two mediocre café mains in Gulberg. Once you understand the per-kilo pricing, it's hard to feel cheated.
